• Methods: Idea #404

What’s your method of learning? There’s this concept that ‘Difficult and meaningful will always bring more satisfaction than easy and meaningless.’ (M.Legace) In other words, anything of value has a cost, and without a cost there’s minimal value. However, we also want to avoid “overspending” on the cost of learning. We see that ‘By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and Third, by experience, which is the bitterest.’ (C.) Join me today in thinking about how you approach growing and developing, and are you using the best method.

  • Desire: Idea #403

Have you ever felt like growing and improving is just too hard, it takes too much effort? I know I have. And then I’m reminded that ‘I think it all comes down to motivation. If you really want to do something, you will work hard for it.’ (E.Hillary) So the bigger question to ask yourself is: “is it really worth it?” What you discover is that ‘The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.’ (W.James) So when we begin to change how we think, we also begin understanding  that ‘I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence but it comes from within. It is there all the time.’ (A.Freud) So, is it too hard? Depends on how much you want to improve, and whether you’re willing to change how you think.

  • Promise: Idea #402

A great sign of growth and development is when others are confident that what you say is what you’ll do. ‘Promise is a word of anticipation, hope, and growth. Don’t over promise and under deliver, instead, under promise and over deliver. The gap between expectation and reality is disappointment. When you promise something, don’t create that gap. Fulfill your promises.’ (J.Maxwell) Join me in being careful to alway deliver on what we promise.
