• Repetition: Idea #27

You may wonder why some ideas are repeated in my Simple Ideas email. Repetition can be a good thing when the idea or habit we want to develop is important. Repetition helps me focus back on what is important. So if you see an idea repeated, think about why it might be important? With that, I recognize that sometimes my ideas may not touch on all your ideas or questions about how to develop yourself personally or professionally. So if you have a question or idea about development, please send me an email and I’ll carefully consider if I have anything worthwhile to contribute to your question or idea. Thank you in advance!

  • Assertive: Idea #26

Assertiveness vs Aggression. How to use the former without falling into the latter. Let’s first define the two ideas – Assertiveness is about stating clearly with confidence what it is that you need from others without disregarding their needs – speaking firmly yet with empathy. Aggression is when you ask for something for yourself without consideration of the impact on others – when you demand without concern, when all you want is to win. We all at times need to speak assertively, especially if we are managers or group leaders. Being assertive helps us “get things done” when other things distract us. It helps us find “win-win” solutions, since we always care about the other person. So as you assert yourself today, make sure you stay away from aggression – think about others first.

  • Courage: Idea #25

‘People don’t follow titles, they follow courage.’ (J.Maxwell) Being courageous means we don’t stay sitting when we need to stand up. We speak up instead of being silent when we see injustice. We don’t make decisions based on what others might think, we base them on what is right. Courage is taking the lead when the future isn’t always so clear, taking a risk because we believe it’s the best thing to do. It’s understanding that despite the fear we might feel, we still take action – that’s courage. Remember, courage isn’t demonstrated with words – it’s our actions. So be courageous today!
