• Assertive: Idea #26

Assertiveness vs Aggression. How to use the former without falling into the latter. Let’s first define the two ideas – Assertiveness is about stating clearly with confidence what it is that you need from others without disregarding their needs – speaking firmly yet with empathy. Aggression is when you ask for something for yourself without consideration of the impact on others – when you demand without concern, when all you want is to win. We all at times need to speak assertively, especially if we are managers or group leaders. Being assertive helps us “get things done” when other things distract us. It helps us find “win-win” solutions, since we always care about the other person. So as you assert yourself today, make sure you stay away from aggression – think about others first.

  • Courage: Idea #25

‘People don’t follow titles, they follow courage.’ (J.Maxwell) Being courageous means we don’t stay sitting when we need to stand up. We speak up instead of being silent when we see injustice. We don’t make decisions based on what others might think, we base them on what is right. Courage is taking the lead when the future isn’t always so clear, taking a risk because we believe it’s the best thing to do. It’s understanding that despite the fear we might feel, we still take action – that’s courage. Remember, courage isn’t demonstrated with words – it’s our actions. So be courageous today!

  • Unique: Idea #24

‘YOUnique…At birth, each of us is original. Our DNA has never existed before on this planet. No one will ever have our unique set of experiences. No one will ever have our totally unique point of view…Therefore, you must, I beg you, you must lean into who you are and not chase after, (or) desire something different, or be molded into something you were never designed to be…You can be a great employee, while…not morphing into a different person, because that is what the culture often requires, encourages, and rewards.’ (T.Storch) You are unique, so excel in your uniqueness.
