Automation seems to be a great buzzword these days, and anyone that knows me knows I’m a fan of true automation – because it delivers both speed and quality. However, how often do we automate BEFORE we optimize? Which means we automate an inferior process, much more liable to break. So, as you look for areas of process improvement daily, both in yourself and in your work, think about how well the process works, should you try to optimize before you automate? Optimizing doesn’t have to be hard, or take long, or require lots of time or money investment. It can be simple changes that “just work more smoothly and efficiently”. Then you can automate the steps to allow you to focus on more creative and value-added work. What will you optimize today?

Relationships: Idea #34
In today’s hybrid working environment where great infrastructure allows us to work from almost anywhere, why should we meet up with others “face to face”? Why should we take the time to dress up a bit more, spend time commuting, and risk getting less done due to interruptions while working? My reason to do so is because I’m a human, and humans are designed to relate, and develop relationships with others. It’s well known that many times a good relationship is more important than the best price, the fastest service, the latest product, etc. When you have a good relationship with your teammates, you’ll be more flexible with their needs, you’ll have more understanding of their communications, you’ll have more empathy for their struggles – and the result is a larger outcome due to the synergy that’s possible when face to face.

Meaningful: Idea #33
Why do people stay with a company or a team for any length of time? In today’s world there’s a lot of movement from one job to another, however, there are reasons to stay with a job that are more than just the pay. One of those is about having meaningful work. What makes work meaningful. One idea is that work that has a purpose, shows real benefit, and that delivers some value – is meaningful. All of these definitions are personal and may be different for you. If you take time to meditate on what it is that you do, how your work helps others, you should be able to find a purpose for your work – thus making it meaningful. And having meaningful work means you’ll enjoy your day much more.
