• Preparation: Idea #50

‘The more prepared person usually wins.’ (J.Clear), however, ‘You get credit for action, not preparation.’ (J.Clear) Sounds contradictory doesn’t it. While it’s true that actions are what you’re recognized for, great actions don’t happen without preparation. When you manage a project, preparing is half the work involved if you want to be successful. Of course, if you never deliver all the preparation in the world isn’t going to save you. In my experience working in Lean Six Sigma projects, sometimes it seemed as if too much time was spent on prepping, however, all that work paid off in the end. What are you preparing for today, and how will you act on it?

  • Thanks: Idea #49

Here’s a tip for building better relationships at work: be generous with simple “Thank You’s”. ‘Gratitude is vital to cultivating ally relationships. The obvious application is that you build a connection with others every time you say thank you. When we are intentional about expressing our gratitude, we’re acknowledging the other person’s value in our life.’ (M.Barrett) Showing gratitude by saying Thank You is also good for you, it helps you remember that success is better with others, in fact, it requires the support of others. It also helps you to see that “winning” is not just for you, it’s for everyone. Who have you thanked today?

  • Win/Loss: Idea #48

How do we differentiate between a “win” and a “loss”? Maybe a better question is: should we? What may look like a win at first could turn out to be a loss, and vice-versa. ‘In 1915, copper miner Stephen Jenkin received one thing we all wish for when we travel: a free upgrade. His ocean liner ticket back to the U.S. was switched at the last minute to a new and more luxurious ship…the Titanic.’ (J.Schroeder) We don’t always know the outcome of events in our life, or recognize “blessings in disguise”. However, our instinct is to immediately categorize things, which may lead us to make wrong decisions based on that categorization. What “blessing in disguise” are you facing today?
