• Listen: Idea #521

Idea #6 – ‘Seek first to understand, then to be understood’. (S.R.Covey) How often do we not understand why people do what they do, or act how they act? Why do we get frustrated when others don’t seem to understand our thinking? Perhaps it’s because we haven’t taken time to really listen to them, to hear and understand their thinking, before we label them as difficult or challenging. So today, think about the most challenging person you need to work with, and take time to deeply listen to what they have to say – BEFORE you start talking about what you need.

  • Attitude: Idea #520

Your attitude in life has a huge impact on how you develop and how fast you grow. ‘Developing eternal optimism is one of the greatest joys to experience for yourself and all those around you. Discover this… it is within you!’ (K.Ramsey) Another way to say that is “choose happiness”. This is an action we need to take every day. ‘Always end the day with a positive thought. No matter how hard things were, tomorrow’s a fresh opportunity to make it better’ (M.Blaszczyk) We have so many opportunities to start fresh. Finally, ‘If you really want to be successful and you really want to be happy, don’t have a job, have a purpose. When you’ve got a purpose, the whole world is your office.’ (P.Coelho) Having a purpose in life is a topic I’ve mentioned before, so make sure of yours.

  • Influence: Idea #519

Here’s a great definition of leadership. ‘Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. When you focus on the influence you have on others over focusing on the respect you receive from the people around you, it will build your credibility. Grow influence before you grow position. Grow your connection through relationships and production more than you grow your position and the respect you want from others. When you focus on influence, leadership happens.’ (J.Maxwell) How much influence do you have, and are you working on that as a part of your development?
